Alice Mixon Vaughn holding Grace and Elbert Vaughn with Elmer. Elbert and Alice Victoria Mixon were married January 13, 1901 in Hatfield, Arkansas. The summer of 1901 Elberet was sent to Waldron to help build more track on the Arkansas and Western which the Kanasa City Southern had acquired and then was sent to Bates to supervise the building of mine spurs. A large Kansas City Southern steam locomative in Heavener. Large steam engines similar to this one came through Bates up until the mid 1940's and would stop at the fairly large railroad station at Bates to deliver freight and mail. There was also a siding at Bates where they would switch cars used by the coal mines. |

A couple of derailed flat cars and the engine on the Arkansas and Western line from Heavener through Bates to Waldron. Looks as if the engine was pushing the flat cars which might have been carrying new railroad ties. |
